HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Dhahran International Airport in Dhahran serves the Eastern Province in Saudi Arabia. It is one of the architectural works of Minoru Yamasaki, and was completed in 1961.

King Saud was then monarch, and he wanted the domestic terminal to have as much importance as the international, though it required only one-third the area. The solution combines the two terminals into one building giving them equal importance. They are united by an open portico which provides automobile access to the two entrances.

The architecture is a blending of traditional islamic forms with modern technology, for example the flight control tower has the appearance of a minaret. Images of the terminal have been used on Saudi banknotes. The terminal is viewed as having influenced the design of a number of important buildings throughout the Middle East.

The terminal primary purpose was to serve for international traffic and for Aramco personnel based in the Dhahran area traveling to and from Europe and the United States. At that time domestic air travel in Saudi Arabia was limited; now, with the rapidly developing economy, domestic traffic is as important as the international.
